Osmania Medical Alumni Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Osmania Medical Alumni Charitable Foundation, Inc. was formed on March 19, 2002. It is registered in the Slate of Oklahoma as a non-profit corporation. We have been approved by the IRS as a tax exempt charitable foundation (501-c3 Corporation). (Tax ID#01-0651759) Since its inception the following projects have been undertaken:

  1. Electronic Library at Osmania, Gandhi and Kakatiya Medical Colleges
  2. ACLS Labs at Osmania, Gandhi and Kakatiya Medical Colleges
  3. Visiting Professor Program
  4. Preventive Health Education

Future projects include:

  1. Trauma Care/Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  2. Neonatal Care
  3. Burn Care
  4. d. Community Based Free Clinics

Electronic Library installation has been completed at all three medical colleges. We have installed five computers and laser printers at each of the three medical schools with a DSL line and they are connected to the National Medical Library in Washington, D.C. The installation and supervision of these libraries was done by Dr. Neeraj Raj, of MEDRC EDUTECH LTD., Hyderabad, India. We have employed three individuals with computer knowledge, one at each medical school, who is responsible for day-to-day operations of the e-library. We have received reports that the e-library is being used quite extensively by medical students, postgraduates and staff of the medical schools. By doing this project we have made the latest information available at our medical schools. It will be costing us about $9,000.00 per year to pay for the maintenance and supervision of all three e-libraries. We would like to expand this program by supplying CD-ROMS of the latest medical literature and subscriptions online for current medical journals, with the generous support of our members at OUMA, which will help to keep the medical library at our Alma Mater abreast of the latest developments in medicine and provide them access to state-of-the-art skills and knowledge.

Medical Journals are not available in the medical colleges. You may donate your journal and textbooks directly to the librarian regularly by surface mail by U.S. Post Office M-bags (approx. $1 per pound). Please notify me for follow up. If you prefer to make a contribution, please make a check to "OMACFI".

ACLS Labs were set up at Osmania, Gandhi and Kakatiya medical colleges under the leadership of Dr. Ravi Surakanti. We had a very generous donation by one of our alumni which helped us to buy all the ACLS equipment for each of the three medical colleges. Dr. Ravi Surakanti conducted extensive teaching classes for ACLS.

The Visiting Professor Program under the leadership of Dr. Dharmapuri Vidyasagar and Dr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli has been initiated. Dr. Melvin Lopata, Professor of Medicine and Dr. Vinod Puri, Professor of Critical Care visited Osmania Medical College and Mediciti Hospital since we started this program. Mr. Arunakanth Duvvury, Respiratory Therapist was also sponsored to visit Hyderabad and was able to spend a week at each of the three teaching hospitals and interact with and update the local respiratory therapists. We would welcome Volunteer Faculty of OUMA and also sponsors to fund the Visiting Professor Program by helping U.S. Faculty to visit Hyderabad and Warangal. We will coordinate the local hospitality arrangements with host institutions. This way we will be able to bring internationally recognized experts to our institutions for productive and fruitful exchange of knowledge.

Preventive Health Education: We will promote health education in the areas of:

  • Tobacco
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • AIDS
  • Evils of Tobacco CD developed by our distinguished alumnus. Dr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli was co-sponsored by OUMA.

Future Projects:

We will be partnering with AAPI and other organizations in our future projects like Neonatal Care and Burn Care at our teaching hospitals, Trauma Care/FMS System in Hyderabad. We are in the initial stages of exploring Rural Health Clinics.

Proposed Community based free clinics both in the U.S.A. and India need financial support. If you want to contribute to a designated free clinic, it can be done through the Charitable Foundation. I feel we owe our success as physicians to our professors and medical schools in India. It is time we pay a debt to the very schools that helped us achieve our goals.
